Sarah Virgin – Bio

  • Why did you study engineering?

I wanted to learn and improve my skill set on how to solve problems. I have a natural curiosity to understand how things work, and engineering continuously fulfils that curiosity for me.

I studied Mechanical Engineering at Stellenbosch University. I was particularly drawn to mechanical engineering due to its versatility within the industry, and its inherent connection to creativity through design and problem-solving.

  • What do you love about engineering?

I love how engineering takes a theoretical issue and creates a practical solution for that issue. It is the most rewarding work, because I can see physical results through my work. I also love how it applies to almost everything in our lives, making it so accessible to explore, and to use to improve systems.

  • What do you love about working at One Eighty?

At One Eighty, I love the energy and passion that everyone approaches their work with. It’s extremely motivating. It makes me want to learn more to enhance my problem-solving skills, which is also enhanced by the variety of work we receive. I have worked in a variety of industries, ranging from biomedical, to food and beverage, each teaching me something new about my discipline with each project, which I love.

  • What is your word for the year and why did you choose it?

My word of the year for 2025, is “Excel”. I chose this word, because I wanted to approach my work this year with a mindset of pushing myself to improve on small details that will ultimately make a bigger difference in the final product. It’s about constantly improving yourself and not settling for complacency.

  • What do you do for fun on the weekend?

When I’m not at work, you can find me spending lots of time with my friends and family, usually at concerts because I love music, in nature, and occasionally out doing something sporty.
