Bianca Rode has recently joined the team at One Eighty as our Lead Consulting Engineer for Metal Alloys. She has a BEng (Hons – Welding), IWE (00094), PREng (20150511).
We asked her a few questions so you can get to know her:
My focus has always been in metals and welding, so from that it has been a natural transition into heading the Metal Alloy and Welding division in One-Eighty. It’s a bit odd for a metallurgist to say, but my passion has always been people. I believe that a person should strive to improve a little bit of the world around them. My business world rotates around failure investigations, risk-based inspection, material selection, process operation, life extension and large asset management. It’s not an obvious or glorious way to change the world, but I’d like to believe it that gradual change is lasting change.
Tuks of niks! I’m a proud Tukkie, and doubly proud of the Metallurgical department at Tuks. I studied Metallurgical Engineering, which a 4-year degree at Tuks (if you don’t travel the scenic route). In 2012 I had the opportunity to do my honours in welding.
I’m almost always reading something! Yesterday I finished “Extreme Ownership” by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin. If you get past the first chapter, you won’t regret reading it! My favourite book of all time is by a man called Mark Mason “The subtle art…”. If you can get past the swearing, it’s a very insightful book.
To relax, I’m a big science fiction fan. After all, the science fiction of today is the science of tomorrow! Take Star Trek for example, (yes, I’m going to nerd-out a little). Tablets, computers, clean energy, robots and cell phones are just some of the examples of things considered SF 40 years ago but are now common place.
I’d have to place reading in the top 5. But I do love running, camping, traveling and spending time with friends and family.
People. What better reason is there?
The freedom, the opportunity and the plethora (I love that word) of new challenges.
This is a good world. We need not approve of all the items in it, nor of all the individuals in it; but the world itself (which is more than its parts or individuals; which has a soul, a spirit, a fundamental relation to each of us deeper than all other relations) is a friendly world. – Jan Smuts
