Her PhD focussed on the development of a cast CROMANITE™ alloy for Columbus Stainless; specifically on microstructure-property relationships of a CROMANITE™ base composition with additions of precipitate (fine particles that harden the steel) forming elements. Janet finished her PhD in 2000 and worked for a further 2 years at UCT as a post doctoral fellow. The focus of the work was to develop models of the hot rolling process so that prediction of mechanical properties could be made as a function of rolling schedule. Janet is now the director of One Eighty (Pty) Ltd and over the last few years completed a number of projects for the manufacturing industry in South Africa, including research and development work, failure investigation or forensic engineering and general problem solving.
